Is it ok to put the water jacket covers back on without putting a thermostat in? I know on a car motor you can run your engine with no thermostat but is it ok for outboard motors? Just in case its needed, I have a 1985 Evinrude 150 HP. I assume it would be ok and that it would just take a bit longer for the engine to warm up but I just want to make sure.

Re: Thermostat Question

Your engine will run cooler than optimal, causing incomplete ignition, more easily fouled plugs, excessive carbon build-up, less mpg, etc. Your particular motor may have other issues w/o thermostat, depending on how the water was designed to flow through the powerhead to cool your motor.

You CAN run your motor w/o a thermostat, and I have done so to help diagnose water-flow issues, but I would DEFINITELY run the thermostat for normal use.

Good luck!
