I've got a '71 Cobia 21 ft, Mercruiser 165 (Chevy 250), pre Alpha outdrive. It's my first boat, bought it from a buddy, all the wiring except the factory mercruiser harness and trim harness was speaker wire, and hardly anything worked. I fabricated a new instrument panel, installed a new circuit breaker/rocker switch distribution panel, and have rewired everything with marine wire. I left the mercruiser harnesses in place, they're still in good condition. Everything is working except trim in the up direction, which ironically did work before. I replaced the wiring on the pump/solenoid, but went one for one so I'm sure that hasn't changed.

There's three wires from the power/shift lever, blue, green, & red. The red wire was dyked off, so I'm assuming I did it while removing the rat's nest. I ran it to power, which gave me down travel. Up on the switch does nothing. I'm going to get back at it in the morning, but was hoping someone could tell me what's missing. My shop manual shows a purple wire in the schematics, but it's non existent in the harness. Only have the red, blue, & green wires from the pump to the lever. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Mercruiser 165 trim wiring

Purple should be key switch power. Red is Hot, Green (grass) is down and Blue (sky) is up. Merc is usually not dependent on the key switch like OMC and Volvo. Not knowing what what switch you have...If it's a 3 button on the dash or somewhere NOT on the handle UP is the only one using a relay and down is wired direct to the pump. Up with run to a relay that has power from the battery.

Here is a wiring diagram for your engine, instrutment panel and trim. May help you find your problem since it did work prior to your work.
