Sometimes when pulling rope tight ratchet engages well, most times complete rope can go all the way out the reel. Have to pull repeatedly the rope till system engages. The starter spring has a good load when winding rope backwards. When pushing rope real side upwards with finger, the ratchet engages much better.

There seems to be some sort of inside part detereoration, probaby starter shaft is worn ? BTW ratchet is not slipping, just misses crimping against whywheel head, sliding internal parts are properly greased. Any ideas ?

Make sure the friction area for the ratchet activator is CLEAN, and all pivot points are lubed. You may have a weak ratchet spring.

Paul,

The pivoting points are inmaculate clean and greased, but when removing grease specially around starter shaft and ratchet guide B the system engages better, misses much less. By weak spring, you mean the one between recoil starter head and reel, part 345-050040, right ?

Luis, No, I was referring to Ratchet Guide B. That area at the shaft must be very clean, as the friction there causes the ratchet engagement. The starter spring (there is s new superceded part number 345 050041), should not have any effect as long as it is tight enough to return the rope correctly.

Thanks Paul,

It's incredible how a worn ratchet guide B can give all this endless rope pulling trouble. All sliding parts have been polished and lightly greased before assemblling back. With plier have bent both guide's ends to flatten them out including both guide sides slight passing round portion inwards, has dramatically increased friction grip against central shaft & widen the ratchet gap engaging flywheel properly at tight pulls. As the thin spring is completely bendable, no need to place a new one. You always learn something under trial & error...
