I would like to compile a list of members who specifically operate with the Stringer 400 and 800 Hydro and Full mechanical drives. This way we can bounce ideas/suggestions/fixes off one another. I find it a little difficult to weed through the posts of those with Cobra or Electric shift setups for answers and information to what I'm looking for.

In addition, I have gained quite a bit of knowledge of these drives over the past 4 years that I have owned them and would like to be available to PM's for any newcomers who may need an intro to these drives.

If you are interested in joining this group, please add me as a friend and I'll include your name in the list below. Also, please make sure your signature is completed with your specific setup so we know what everyone is operating with. See my signature for example.

*EDIT* Facebook group created! Come join us at: http://www.facebook.com/groups/277902375646149/

Very nice boat. I like the paint job on the drive as well. I need to paint mine.

Okay. I'm new to OMC. I have a 1981 sea ray with a 3.8L stringer 800. Not sure what shift. How do I know.

look above the propeller, just next to the idle relief holes in the lower unit.
A pocket with a rectangular zinc anode there means you have a full mechanical shift lower, no pocket/anode means you have a hydromechanical shift lower

No it's just a little red primer. Was playing around with cleanup and paint colors

1987 chris craft 210 cuddy. 5.7 liter stringer 800. I think it's hydro mech but it's in storage an hour away. Only had it a few months and Im not sure. Seems this was the very last of the stringers, 1987 was start of cobras.

I am a newbie here, back into boating after too long away. Love the site!

I like southkogs comment, that was very funny, the poor electric shift folks, two different kinds of gear oil! what the heck.

Put me on your list Nivekt.

I had my fifth season this year with a 1979 OMC 800. It’s been a lot of work and a lot of fun. Mostly like to cruise with the family on Puget Sound and Lake Washington. But this year took three species fishing with my lake cruiser. Ling cod, Dungees and Coho. One coho was taken with just captain on board. That was interesting.

Perhaps the "club name" should be: OMC Owners Prevention - Preservation Society (OOPS).

The idea is to prevent new owners and preserve those that have already made the purchase.

Enjoy!

Whow nice Nivekt, Question, any idea what the boat weights and hows the bunks work for you, I have rollers which i dont really care for, they seem to leave black rub marks, could replace them but may consider changing to bunks.

Thanks.

My boat weighs 2700 lbs empty w/ no fuel. My floor is bad in a few spots and Im sure Ive got water in the foam so the boat is most likely a bit or much heavier than the listed weight.

I like my bunks a lot. Launching and landing the boat is a breeze. I just back the boat in far enough for it to float which is basically the top of the wheel guards then she glides right off. When I land her I just back the trailer in the same amount, guide the boat in and then rock her to center her as I have a friend pull her out of the water very slowly. I just rebuilt/replaced all of the bunks w/ new wood and carpet. Also replaced my rollers.

They do make PVC or thermoplastic rubber replacement rollers that will leave no marks on your boat. They are a bit more expensive than the black rubber ones but last much longer. Measure yours up and go do some shopping around...These kind of look like yours: http://www.etrailer.com/Boat-Trailer-Parts/Yates-Rubber/YR500YW-8PEZ.html

I like etrailer.com and easternmarine.com for trailer parts. Best prices around from what I've seen.

I have no experience with trailers that use rollers solely so I cant say if they are better than bunk trailers. You should hop over to the trailer forum and see what those folks have to say.
