Got me a cpl new toys, the lark 40 is a 1962? mod # 35531-m I think the "m" designates it as a manual shift not the selectric? not sure tho as the shift lever is stuck in neutral, does it have a single water pick-up tube? & use mostly standard Ruddy 40 components, impeller, coils etc. The Hustler 75 hp supposedly has a hole in one of the pistons says the PO. The Lark pulls over and seems to have good compression & appears to be complete minus the prop. any info on either will be most appreciated. thanks' kb

Yes, it is a 1962 40 horse,but the "M" is only a batch code.

35531 is the model number for a long shaft though. Is it still a long shaft?

It does have the double water line water pump with thermostatically controlled cooling system. Ensure the stat and pressure control valve is present when running that motor.

Does have the smaller crank, but have never had trouble personally. Does have the increased torque on the flywheel, 105 ft/lbs or that key will snap when in use.

No, Chris, they discontinued the smaller crank and compression release heads after 1961. The 1962 was the first year of the larger crank and later style head.

If your gearshift is stuck in neutral, check the throttle position. You have to turn it down to get it to shift. If it's locked tight, as in STUCK, then you'll need to pull the powerhead and get it apart, so you can clean and re-lube the shaft. I had a Lark IV like that and sold it last Spring. Nice old motors and reliable.

If you have a manual for a 1959 35 horse, you will find that these engines are very similar and apart from some different parts serial numbers, which are often interchangeable in spite of different numbers you should be fine with the earlier manuals.
If you want it as a collectors item, you should be able to get it at Cook's

Ah, it's cool Chris. We watch each other's back's. ;) I've slipped a time or two, also. :D

Yea, kodibass, those motors from '58 to '70 was all pretty much the same They had a few minor changes, through the years, like the cranks and heads and not to mention the fuel pumps. If you're mechanically inclined, a Seloc will work out just fine. Supposedly, the factory service manual gives you more info, but I haven't found a whole lot more than what Seloc provides. Anymore, I typically don't even pick up a shop manual. LOL

Those old Larks are good, dependable motors. If tuned right, they'll run forever and parts are cheap and plentiful now.

All that is true, but you forgot to mention that they are very thirsty little machines.

True, but not quite as thirsty as that 75 would be :D:D

You're right. You will want to take a couple tanks of fuel when you go out in it.

I have the same '62 Lark. I like it. It's pretty quiet. And yes, it does have the double water tube. It was my first double tubed LU to change and I was a tad concerned but it was dirt easy! I changed it from a Long Shaft to a Short Shaft and now run it on my Feathercraft Ranger. I have the parts manual if you want it. If yes, PM me your email address and model.

Re: 1962 Lark 40 & hustler (photos)

I sold my '61 and '62 earlier this year, but I still have my '58. It was actually the nicest one of the three. I still have two other 35's as well. My '59 Lone Star has the '59 RDSL-21B on it and I have a nice '57 Big Twin on my motor rack. Those two that I sold were nice runners and went to good use.

Like I said I will be a bit before i get to it, as I have 2 rebuilds in front of the lark, the one I'm doing right now is a 1954 auqusonic 25
but I will at least be able to give her a f.a.c.t.s check this week end, and i to agree the are very handsom motors

1954 Auquasonic would be a cool project. A good one to totally restore. ;)

Hmmm...I've never heard of the Hustler. What years were they made? What sets them apart from the other 75hp models?

Re: 1962 Lark 40 & hustler (photos)

I'm not sure on the hustler myself, I looked a bit on the net-utube and I think this might have been a boat-package deal? I was wondering the same as what the differences are from a 70, cause if I need to get a power head, piston or other parts the 70's are much easier to come by, I do like the look of it as far as the paint & decals.

Re: 1962 Lark 40 & hustler (photos)

The Hustler was a marketing approach for Evinrude in '74. They introduced a three engine line of sport outboards designed for high performance boating and family class racing. The trio of muscle motors included the 135 hp Strangler, the 70 hp Hustler and the 50 hp Sizzler.

Thanks' Hightrim, do you know if the block and pistons are the same as a 70 hp of about the same year?
