loud chirp noise from my 1996 25hp 2stroke mercury started after going through a grassy section of the river happend three times once when started once when put in gear once random. grass cut off water pump flow for a short time don't think it got to hot motor ran like a clutch slipping grass i thought have not ran it since

Chirp could be prop slipping and re-engaging. Mark spline to outer part of inner hub and run it. Take it off and if lines not still in alignment you have your problem.

Your 25 may have an over temp alarm which should have sounded before you did any damage to your powerhead due to low cooling water.
