I have a 1968 Johnson 20hp boat motor. I was out in the boat and it was running but it would not go wide open then as it was running it jerked (kinda like you hit a stump but I did not hit a stump). Then it started to make a clinking like sound and then it just stopped going but sounded as if it was i had to paddle back. I have put a new fly wheel and a half moon looking pin that goes under the fly wheel new spark plugs and supposedly the carburetor was cleaned out. I changed the spark plugs today while out on the water with the kids and adjusted the knob for the gas/idle before it would even start. I need some help please I love fishing and so does my kid, niece, nephew and my dog.

Hi j. Great old motor you've got there. I have a '66 20 hp myself. When you say it felt like you hit something that makes me think you may have a worn clutch dog, which is a part in the gear case and tends to wear out over the years. You may have also over heated. Does the motor still turn over? What fuel/oil mix were are you using. You should be running 50:1, but I like to run 24:1 myself. You should also use Champion J4C or J6C spark plugs. Here's a great link that can help you get familiar with your motor as well as a parts catalog with exploded diagrams. To bring her back to life you need to check the compression, spark and fuel. As long as the compression is over 80 psi in each cylinder without a large discrepancy between the two cylinders all the rest can be fixed pretty easily. You can get any routine parts you may need right here at iboats. Good luck. Holler if you get stuck.

Ok sounds like a few things happened to you on the water.

Pull off your prop and check your drive pin, may have sheared it when it jerked. Now why did it jerk? Well, could be a worn dog like stated above. Could have sheared your flywheel key. What did you torque it to when reinstalling the flywheel? Why did you change it in the first place? Was the key a hardware store key?

yes it still turns over and start just took of the prop and the drive pin was broke in three places plus my water pump is out and last my bottom half where the prop is water got in there don't know why or how but i thought water isn't suppose to get in there. the half moon key that goes in they fly wheel one was bought at a hardware store and the other one was bought at an auto parts store. the first fly wheel that was on there some how it got stripped on the inside so i found out that the 1958 evinrude motor i have it's fly wheel would also fit on my 1968 johnson so i changed out fly wheels cause they are hard to come by. Cause they aren't made no more go figure i thought everyone had them. i don't know what made it jerk i just started it and it started doing it but of corse that is also when we found out the fly wheel was stripped.

Hardware store keys are no good. They will shear, as will they shear if not properly torqued. Throw it out and get a proper key.

If water is in your gearcase, may be time for a reseal. Did you change the oil and find the water?

yes, 50:1 is fine. Although, I run a richer in my '66 20 hp for a little extra safety without issue as well. You can get both 2-stroke marine oil and marine gear case oil at wal mart for pretty cheap. You'll also need a little pump to get the oil into the gear case. Here are some pics and a vid on how to change the gear case oil.

If you find you need to reseal the lower unit, you can get a reseal kit right here at iboats. You'll also need some 3M 847 gasket sealant, which you may have to get online.
