Cant get engine to shut off with key or kill switch....any help greatly appreciated...thanks jason

check the pigtail harness for corrosion at the engine end. spray some lube on it. check the grounds for the kill switch .Just a thought

A 1973 850 should be battery CD meaning it has a distributor and the system is powered by the battery, so the voltage to the battery is not being interupted by the key switch (might be a bad switch) or there is a short in the wiring harness. It can be checked with a voltmeter on the white terminal on the swtich box (4 post side) 12 volt with the key on and none with the key off.

And given that it's a '73 model check for broken/corroded wires along with cracked insulation. A notorious problem with old Mercs.
