Hello All,

I recently purchased a 1985 Evinrude 20 hp outboard. After I got it home I noticed that the bolt which holds the tilt slide had been sheared off in the housing.

I started to drill it out and extract it but had no luck. Anyway, I have marred up the threads now and the 1/4 inch bolt hole is too large.

My thoughts were to fill the existing hole with either JB Weld or something else (any suggestions) let harden and tap the filled hole with the correct thread so I can use the original bolt size.

Any other ideas? Is JB Weld a good filler to be drilled and tapped?

I would rather use Helicoil to fix it.
It is hard to see from the picture, but is there enough "meat" left to put the Helicoil in?
Good luck, Peter

Helicoil is best way to go. They are actually stronger than the orignial thread.

The "worst case" would be tap the hole (if it is too large for a helicoil) to a larger bolt and file the head flat similar to the other side.
