Replacing Impeller on 1989 Alpha1 outdrive - question

I am planning to replace the impeller myself this time around - I have Don S's sticky note on replacing the impeller - read it through several times - however - why do I keep thinking I am supposed to make sure the gear selector is in forward all the way before I start disassembling the lower unit? Or is that a step for another procedure such as removing the outdrive as a whole?

must be in fwd to remove the drive and should be in fwd when dropping the lower unit.while in fwd you can rotate the prop backwards to align the driveshaft splines.

Ayuh,.... Ya start takin' the lower off, with the controller in forward,...

The lower unit will drop off the upper unit, or you can pull the Whole drive, 'n split it on the bench...

Ya pull the lower off the upper, or if already off, ya change out the water pump, or it's impeller...

To reassemble the lower to the upper, 'n when installin' the Whole drive, ya manually shift it into Forward, to align everything....

Now, it won't stay in forward, by itself,...
Ya gotta hold tension on the propshaft, or it'll pop into neutral...

I use a bungee strap...

these guys are getting faster with their typing ^^^ :D

When you remove/reinstall the complete drive from the boat, you want to have the shifter in forward.

When you reinstall the drive halves together, they both have to be in forward or else you will have issues shifting gears, will not damage but won't shift properly.

You can separate the drive halves in any gear no damage will result.

Here is a video to go along with the manuals:

Yep, just like BD said but so maybe it makes a little more sense.

If you put the drive all the way up and lay on your back and look at the mid-front of the drive, you'll see the shift shaft that's in the lower half of the drive lodged in the shift shoe that's in the bell housing.

If the drive is in neutral, the shift shaft will be pointing toward the port side of the boat and in reverse, even farther to port.
When in forward, they will point directly fore-and-aft while will make the removal and installation work without bending something.
