Hi Ive got a 1980 mercury 50hp bluestripe s/n5844... manual start/trim at the moment i have a car battery in the boat to run radio etc but have to charge it up at home at night. Is there any way of getting this engine to put out 12volt? I relise it will need a retifier and the such but do i need to change the flywheel winding's or the likes? Has any one tryed this before or am i just biteing off than its worth?

In my quest to understand the unrelated trigger assemblies on my '84 50hp, I did notice that there are two stators -- stators have are the windings that your flywheel magnets excite -- noted in the parts fiche, one for the manual start and one for the electric start. The electric start one, IIRC, was about three times as much as the manual one, implying to me that the electric stator has more windings, and perhaps a built-in rectifier. Caution, cuz that built-in rectifier is just a guess.

Just looking at online parts diagrams, it would appear that you would (in addition to a rectifier or regulator) also need a flywheel and stator from the electric start version; and that's assuming that the ratchet device that attaches to the top of the manual start flywheel for catching the recoil starting device would fit to the electric start flywheel.

If I was going to do all that, I'd consider putting an electric starter on that puppy, too.
