Could someone tell me a little story about DVAs and their basic use please?

I need to know a little more about DVAs. Such as; exactly what do they do? what components are tested with one? are they the same as a "peak voltage adapter"? where do I get one? what is the best one to get?

You can test the outputs of the stator, trigger, switch box and coil inputs. You can't diagnose without one. They all do the same thing so buy an inexpensive one.

Now that you know what and why, you can build your own from Radio Shack parts or buy one.

I built mine as I had the parts lying around the shop. The values of the components aren't real critical as if your engine is working your numbers will be close to published values and that in itself pretty much tells you if your engine electronics is working. The most important thing is to have the diode and capacitor voltage ratings at least 600V. The size of the C and R can be 20-30% off and still give you a decent answer. The specs in the manual are very wide attesting to what I said.....if you read voltages in the general area the engine is ok.

Look in my archives from a month or two ago and you will see a discussion on the DVA.

The price for a store-bought one seems rather pricey considering what's in one (if this is correct):

Thanks for the bang on info! I might have to build one just to check it out. I wonder if it will work with my digital VOM. I'll have to check em out at the Shack.
