I have the following engine, a Mariner 40hp. I think it's from 1994, is that right? (Engine number: 40 EO - 6E9 S 150087). Last week I went on the water for a few hours and in the last half hour my engine died. In neutral everything was allright, but when I put it in gear, it choked. I also noticed before, in full throttle, that the revs changed a little without touching the throttle.

Also I wunder how I can set my float level. Since my float is completely from plastic I can't adjust a thing, is there a workaround for it? The float doesn't align proper with the float bowl. And I wrecked one of the floates. Which one I need to order from which website. I can't find a site where I can order a float only.

sorry for my bad englisch. I'm from the Netherlands :)

That s/n comes up as:

40 E 6E9-106224 - 6E9-150385 1989

From here:

Parts Listing:

Here is a link to the Clymer Service manual which will help you get started. Note the link is short lived.

http://web.ebscohost.com/serrc/pdf?...b750-f183d8bb2a10@sessionmgr112&vid=4&hid=110

If you do not get to it in time, here is the float height procedure:

To determine the float level, first note
the numbers stamped on the top side of
the carburetor mounting flange. Invert
carburetor body (1-Fig. MR18-2). On
models with the numbers "67900"
stamped on the flange, float (17) should
be parallel (P) with carburetor base. On
models with the numbers "67602"
stamped on the flange, distance (D) from
float (17) base to carburetor base should
be 16,5-22,5 mm (21/32-7/8 in.). If correct
setting is not obtained, renew inlet
needle (15-Fig. MR18-1) and seat (14)
and/or float (17) as needed. Renew float
bowl "0" ring (19).

For some reason my carburator doesn't match with the exploded views. Here's a picture http://imageshack.us/a/img442/4638/img20121014112930.jpg. The float bowl is different which gets met confused.

And where can I find numbers on my carb? I only see 6E970 CK29 And Kei*Hin Japan BC.
I think I have the cabr that doesnt need to be parralel. my float is 17,5mm from base

Seems like I need the following carb kit for a Yamaha C40 (DUAL CARB) http://www.maxrules.com/fixyamahacarb.html#187740 or am I wrong?

Only use the Yamaha kit as it cheaper than the Sierra kit and the parts will fit plus you get a float!!! (been there)...

Thanks, I will buy that one. But the exploded view you gave for my carburater that should be on my Mariner has a different float bowl then the one I have. Why is mine different? Is that normal?

Re: 40hp mariner dies in gear + carburetor float level

Thanks, got my carburators rebuild and cleaned very well. But the engine isn't running very well. When I rev up it will holds down half way.
I already replaced the spark plugs without any succes. Is it possible that my ignition coil is broken? which symptons causes a faulthy ignition coil?

check to see that both plugs are firing if only one is firing you may have another issue. Possible swichbox. If you have spark on both plugs then it is fuel related and carb adjustments may not be correct and the main jets may be clogged. The fuel pump diaphram may also be streched and not pumping sufficient fuel. Check foe leaaking hoses and a clogged fuel tank vent.

Thanks, will check that soon. Does the fuelpump also contain a filter? And what about compression, how much should that be?

compression above 100 PSI is conserdered to be acceptable there should be no more than 15 PSI between cylinders example 110 psi 120 psi 135 PSI 110 would not be acceptable to run correctly.
