No life jackets on party boats out of Sausalito, California

In the 1990's, I went out on a couple of party boats over that decade out of Sausalito, CA and nobody on board wore a life jacket and none were offered to people on board by the captain or deckhands. Admittedly, I never brought a life jacket either but I could have if I wanted to, I suppose.

Perhaps, there should be a USCG rule made to require life jackets to be worn by anglers on all party boats.

I have been on the Flying Fish and the Salty Lady. I hated that mooching crap for deep-sea salmon and preferred trolling except when some amateur got his line tied up in somebody else's. Fishing is best done on a personal boat with no more than 2 lines in the water at a time.

You should read up on the USCG rules and regs. There has to be a PFD for every person aboard a vessel, I'm sure the party boat had them stored and they would've given you one to wear for the duration of the trip if you had asked.

This:

•To meet U.S. Coast Guard requirements, a boat must have a U.S. Coast Guard-approved Type I, II, III, or V life jacket for each person aboard. Boats 16 feet and over must have at least one Type IV throwable device as well.

When you say party boats it means to me since i was on one back in my college days with buddies there was alot of drinking mostly hard booz. Lifejackets were nowhere to be found but none of us cared much because there were some hot looking chicks on board. That was in 1980 Now days i have my own fishing boat wear my life jacket about 90% of the time and enjoy my time out on the water catching salmon, ling cod, pulling pots with keeper crab&shrimp at my own pace, and time. Those charter boats can be crowded and over priced in the Bay Area

Sorry, I did not know I had to ask for a life jacket. If I had my way, there would be a federal law mandating that commercial boat crews MAKE all passengers on board wear the dam things whether they like it or not.

Then I'm glad you're not the man in charge. Yes, people should wear PFD's. No, we don't need any more laws.

Every "party" fishing boat and even smaller charters have the jacket lockers well marked and that is going back into the 1960's (as long as I can remember). There is a possibility that you were not concerned or observant when you went out.

I did take a small charter out on a rough day and the Captain had to change our destination due to weather and offered us to turn back completely.

The boat crews have enough things to keep them busy instead of offering jackets and Dramamine to the passengers. Imagine how that would nerve people up if they were all offered jackets.

Ayuh,... Just because yer accident prone, don't mean We all are...

If pfd's were mandatory, I imagine fishin' party boats would probably go outa business...

Now, on a raftin' trip on the Salmon river, in white water, Anybody without a pfd on is an idiot...

As stated, all vessels are required to carry lifejackets. It's always a good idea to ask where the lifejackets are stowed on ANYvessel you board. If you feel the need to wear one, then I encourage you to do so. You've clearly got enough to worry about, you don't need to be worrying about me. Worrying about me is my responsibility.

Still dubious regarding the claim of anyone without a PFD falling into a hole on the Salmon and living to tell about it. I'm with HC. I think SBL took some grammar lessons and returned to us.

If you are that concerned then bring your own life jacket and wear it the whole time, nothing stopping you from doing it. If I remember correctly it seems about every time I've been out on one of those, or any commercial boat, they have gone over the safety instructions and where the life jackets are located.
