Hello all,

As the name suggests i am of course new to the boating scene. What im looking for is advice on the right boat to serve my needs.

I soon plan to move to Alicante, and while there i would like a yacht with the primary use of coastal cruising... This seemed straight forward enough, however i also want the boat to be able to cross the med to the balearic islands, namely ibiza, but also possibly as far as manorca. Im not sure however if your lower end motor yachts are capable of crossing a distance of this magnitude.

My budget stretches no further than about 100k, thatin itself is a push. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a bundle

If you haven't done so, consider chartering at first, so you get to try out different sizes and designs, and get boating lessons. Starting off in a off shore cruiser is a big leap from the pier.

Crossing any real distance isn't about the boat as much as it's about the captain. Make sure you get a LOT of instruction under your belt before you take any vessel that type distance. We all know stories of people that have circumnavigated the globe in 25' sailboats. Then there are others that have sank in small municipal lakes. Knowledge of navigation, how-to in dealing with bad weather and/or break downs, and overall experience at the helm of any vessel are all things that won't come with the boat. For those long crossings, however, you can usually hire a delivery captain that will either take the vessel to it's ultimate location for you, or, captain the boat while you're aboard to the same place.

Sounds like you'd be much better served contacting a "Buyer's Broker" to help you through this process. He/she will represent your interests alone, and not that of the seller. That person will also have contacts in the surveying field and/or mechanical inspectors. Good luck.

Cheers for the quick responses there folks, appreciate it. I absolutely intend to charter the design of boat before dropping the money, and of course ill take months of lessons with said criser before settin sale on the open sea. Hiring a captain is of course a possible option, and for the first few trips its absolutely a good idea, but i eventually want to the knoweledge to male the trip myself.
