Long, long story short, I need to replace the raw seawater pump on my '94 Four Winns. I am fairly certain it is a Ford block and this diagram is really close to what I'm working with:

http://www.**********/parts/search/...INTAKE MANIFOLD, EXHAUST & COOLING/parts.html

My question is how to remove and reinstall the water pump belt? I know, basic question, but I can't get it in between the two pulleys on the block. Both pulleys have three groves, but only the lower pulley has belts in all three. The upper water pump pulley only has the alternator and power steering belt around it.

I have confirmed the belt number with everywhere I can find online to be 3852348, which is the number that is on it. But how can I get it off and the new one on when there is only about 1/8" to 1/4" clearance between the two pulleys? I thought that maybe it was the wrong belt and it should go around both pulleys on the block (like the alternator and power steering), which would eliminate the need to get in between them, but all research points to the fact that I have the right belt. My only solution appears to be find a longer belt that routes around both pulleys or pull the upper pulley to the circulating water pump. Thoughts?

You will have to remove the circulation pump pulley (4 bolts) to get the belt out.

Thanks Don! That's the confirmation I needed that I wasn't making more work for myself by pulling the pulley. What a pain though...

Yes.. you have to remove the engine water pump pulley as stated above.. Just changed the belts on my '95 Ford 5.0L before winterizing. Seawater belt broke last time out on the lake this year..

Just a warning.. The seawater pump mount makes it a real PITA to tighten the belt if its like mine. Both mount holes are elongated. The pump doesn't simply pivot on one or the other.. You have to pull the entire pump with something to get the belt tight before tightening the bolts. I never did come up with a good solution. Basically used several pry bars and some wooden blocks as a folcrum. Didn't work all that well.. Anyone have a solution to this before this guy gets into this? I know I'd love a better way to tighten the belt on the seawater pump on the Ford 5.0L..

XJpete, I've dealt with tightening the belt a ton as I replace the impeller every year. This was just my first time for the belt. I always struggle with tightening it, but this time what I did was put a screw in the decking to the left of the pump (as you look down on it from the top) and ran a small rope around the pump and around the screw and tied it off. I then took a screw driver and twisted the rope around it, so the screwdriver tightened the rope and pulled the pump along the screws. It worked fairly well... just try to find a static rope that doesn't have much stretch to it.
