What do you guys think about draining the mercruiser lower unit gear oil and then reuse it? I have had the unit resealed 2 yrs ago, as just maintenance, i have never had water issues with it. I only put 10-12 hrs on the boat each yr so i don't think the oil is degraded much, it just seems a shame to throw it away each yr without much use

It does seem a shame but I still change it every year with new oil. I call it cheap insurance.

Just drain out a couple ounces to be sure there is no water in it, or metal on the drain plug. Then put a new gasket on the drain plug and top off the gear lube with some new oil.

I always have used the same gasket after draining, do i need to replace them every year?
