I am looking to add brakes to my boat trailer and will probably go with electric.

Are there any particular brands that handle water better or worse than others?

Any brands to shy away from?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Boat trailer electric brakes

Dexter brand makes the most popular electric brakes.

I hear Quality brand from Princess Auto is lower cost Dexter brand compatible. Meaning, their Quality hubs fit Dexter brake assemblies and Qaulity hubs fit Dexter brake assemblies.

Was told its best to always use "matching" company Brake assemblies and "matching" company drum/brake hubs. Try to avoid Dexter brand on one wheel and non-Dexter brand on opposite wheel. Just like its best to use same brand of rubber on each axle / rim.

For me, I like Dexter brand the best. IMO, they seem thicker metal and hold majority of market share. They may cost $10 more for each brake drum or $10 more for brake assemblies. But in the long run, I hear paying slightly more for Dexter brand is worth it.

Hope this helps...

Do your axles already have brake mounting flanges? If not, you'll need to replace your axles.

Thanks for the responses. I read as many posts as I could on the forum, but didn't find any mention of manufacturers. I had the Dexter auto adjusting brakes and the brake drums w/ EX Lube caps priced out.

My one and only axle (wish it had a second) already has the mounting flanges, so the axle is good to go.

I do not plan on launching in salt water, so heavy corrosion should not be an instantaneous problem.

Before buying, do "double / triple" check brand and bolt pattern. Some drums are only for electric, some are only for hydraulic and some drums can be used for both. And, double check rim's bolt pattern using: http://www.trailercanada.com/pdf_documents/boltcircletemplate.pdf

Hope this helps as well...

Re: Boat trailer electric brakes

I had the Tie Down GalvX drums on my trailer (single axle) and had the trailer for 5 years with no issues. I installed the kits myself and was careful when routing the wires but it wasn't brain surgery. I installed a progressive controller in my truck that I loved. When you hit the brakes the trailer brakes engaged gradually instead instantly. This made for very comfortable towing- no jerking or yanking, especially when you were in traffic. Can't remember the brand though. I thought electrics were the way to go for that trailer. I currently have hydraulic discs on my current trailer and greatly prefer them over the electric drums...
