Hi All,
I have a 74 caravelle 16'0 w/ Mercruiser I/O. I was told if I replace the ignition switch it must be a marine switch and that you cannot use a regular switch that you could use on an old car or truck. Is this true? If it is why?
John Thanks in advance to anyone that can answer this.

Yes it's true. A switch in a marine environment needs to be 'intrinsically safe'. That is, not be a source of ignition should there be any volatile gasses lurking.

An ignition switch is not in the engine compartment, nor a compartment connected to the fuel tank.
