broke on the water - ignition switch

Today I was with my wife, kid, another couple and their kid on the boat about four miles from launch and the ignition switch broke. Thankfully we were only a short ways from a friend's dock and I was able to paddle their and get a ride back to the car and pick everyone up. No one was happy but it could have been much worse.
So the ignition switch is broken. The key just spins and spins and never connects any circuits. I tried jumping from battery to starter and the starter cranks but won't fire. I presume there is no power to the coil and that is why it won't start. We took apart the throttle / ignition housing but there are a lot more wires than I expected on the ignition switch and we had few tools and no electrical tester so that was a bust.
Any advice on either getting a new switch on short notice or figuring out how to jumper the existing one together to at least get the boat running and back to the launch ramp and back home where I can fix it properly?
Are wiring diagrams available on line somewhere for older boats?
The boat is a 1973 Glastron but the motor is a 1971 Johnson, the one with the few year only hydromatic or whatever it is called shifter, the one with the solenoids in the gear case which uses ATF in the gear case not regular gear oil.
Thanks in advance for any help. I have AAA for my car but don't know what to do for my disabled boat.

No one was happy? Next time go out on the other couple's boat... oh wait... they prolly don't have a boat. I dont know what anybody was upset about. Anyways, i would just change out the switch. You will prolly spend more time trying to hot wire it as you would just changing out the part.

1970's had simple switches. Power in, power to ignition and power to the starter. You need to jump the ignition so it will run and then jump the starter.
Best to just replace the switch. It's not hard.

You need to jump it at the switch, not the starter.
You are correct, jumping the starter without power to the ignition just makes the engine spin.

The Starter switch has at least three Terminals labeled...

B = Battery
I = Ignition
S = Starter

Jumping the B to the I will power up the Ignition.
Connecting the B to the S temporarily will crank the Starter.

You could also have..
A = Accessories
C = Choke
M = Magnetos

Once you know how to do it, and how easy it is,
you'll wonder why you bother taking the key out of the ignition! :eek:
We'll make a Boat Thief out of you yet! :D
