I have a Suzuki 225HP 4 stroke engine. When I turn the ignition key I hear a sound that I assume is the fuel pump priming the system and is a quiet noise. When I turn the ignition key off, there is a very loud noise that emanates what sounds like it comes from the engine area but is hard to isolate. my next door neighbor has the exact same engine but his doesnt do this. Anybody have any idea what this sound is, its pretty loud considering.

Re: Noise when shutting off engine

You may be able to isolate the noise if you take the cowl off and have two people. One at the motor and the other turning the key.

This is a guess and I have knowledge of your motor. The ignition switch is faulty and when you turn the key to stop the motor the switch sends power to the starter motor. The sound you are hearing is the pinion gear of the starter grinding on the teeth of the spinning flywheel. This would be easy to check. As I say this is only a guess.

Can you describe the noise you here? Is out a bang, screech, pop, etc.
