I have a 1970 85 hp evinrude. It will only fire up with help from gas in a spray bottle. The carbs have been cleaned several times, fuel pump is new also. Once it is running it runs perfect, just cant get it to fire up with out help. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Should the chokes be closing fully on your model, or should there be a slight "pull off" during start?

Re: 1970 85 H.P. evinrude

for some reason my m8ts 90hp does the same thing , i always have too turn the butterfly just a wee bit by hand to get fuel to the reed valves , so ive adjusted the cam on the butterfly to pick up with the trigger just a wee , wee little bit , being such an old motor there is wear in certain parts , so i had to compensate other adjustments to get it to start with a touch of the key . hes happy as
main things for starting ,vacuum , fuel , air , spark timing & spark if you have all that , then you get vroom , vroom .... cheers

What is the best way to remove the core plugs in the carburetor?

Hold the carb in your lap amd give the plug a rap with a small punch till it just breaks through and then pop it out prying side ways.

Think I figured it out. I have a couple slight air leaks in my gas lines. Gonna replace the lines tomorrow and cross my fingures and toes
