I am going to repaint the hull of my 16' Corson runabout soon. My boat spends most of its time on a trailer and only sees fresh water in Maine. I was wondering, can I use INTERLUX BRIGHTSIDE or Pettit Easypoxy to paint the hull both above and below the waterline?

I am almost certain that Brightsides will NOT hold up at all below the water line. I don't know anything about the Pettit product.

Thom

Rogerfire – Thom has done a beautiful job painting his boat. You can see some pictures he has posted somewhere down in the Project Boats forum.

As far as paint quality goes, bottom coats are regularly evaluated by Powerboat Reports and beginning in 2002 they started testing topside paints, too. They do not give away their articles beyond the current month and one month past…but you can purchase and download just an article on marine paint, $10 non-member, $7.50 member.

The initial test (Feb 2002):

http://www.powerboat-reports.com/pub/15_2/features/5185-1.html

Evaluation after one-year (Feb 2003):

http://www.powerboat-reports.com/pub/16_2/features/5301-1.html

Final 2-year evaluation (Jan 2004):

http://www.powerboat-reports.com/pub/17_1/features/5406-1.html

If you are going to buy one, get the Jan 2004 article. If you want white or blue paint you can see their recommendation without the commentary just by looking at the last link (Jan 2004) I’ve provided.

Note: if you are not familiar with Powerboat Reports, it is similar to Consumer Reports, but only for boat stuff. :) You can sign up for a free 90-membership if you want to evaluate Powerboat Reports’ website. I don’t know if it will let you have the $2.50 discount on articles.
