I can't see the mallet being used to break the bulb, but I could see this light being used in conjunction with an alarm that you had to break the glass first before you could activate it.

It could be some kind of old-school Navy ship light with the mallet being designed to aid in "Going Dark"? I've got a vivid imagination, but I could see the enemy ship approaching and the captain calling, "All hands on deck! All stations go dark!!" and guys rushing around to bust the bulbs out.

Then again, I suppose they could just flip the switch to off, but my way sounds a lot cooler, that's for sure.

It could be used to see what is in the air. Brake the bulb and depending on the flash it could tell you the purity of the air. Kinda like the bird in the cage with the miners.

Give us closeup of the brass label plate or post the characters, especially if there is a Navy Stock Number.
