Mercruiser 260 hp 84 Imp 23 cuddy

Tried starting it today and it cranked a few times and then just clicks. All electrical accessories work, batteries are 3 years old and I keep a charger hooked up to them when not in use. Could it be the batteries don't have enough juice to crank the engine but run the accessories?

could be batteries, could be battery connections.

take the batteries out and have them tested - if bad, replace them. then clean all the cable connections.

if you have anything more than a small milliamp maintenance charger, you most likely have cooked the batteries by keeping a charger hooked up to them.

Checked all connections, jumped it and still get just a clicking noise from the solonoid. Rapped the starter and solonoid a couple of times with a hammer same thing. I can turn the engine with a socket on a ratchet, so I'm guessing it must be the starter.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... A test light will tell ya whether the solenoid is passin' power, 'n whether the starter is Gettin' power....

A Hammer is Not the proper Test Tool...:facepalm:

you checked the connections visually, or you pulled them apart, used scotchbright pad and cleaned them prior to putting them together?

Also, what is the voltage at the battery when it goes click?

It really sounds like a bad connection. Check your grounds too, not just the + side.
