Ok, I have a 140 Merc i/o 1987 vintage gm 4cyl block. We couldnt get it up to speed, so we replaced distributor... that didnt help. Sooo we tore the head off, put a new head gasket on after finding water in the oil. put it back together with a new gasket on the intake/exhaust manifold. Brought it out, it ran fine but noticed some water coming OUT of the gasket/exhaust face. Ran it again and found water in the oil. I plan to change out the exhaust gasket again, does anyone recommend any type of goop on it? permatex aircraft sealant? ultra copper? also, any suggestions at other common locations where water could be getting in?<br /> Adam

cracked manifold or riser, exaust gaskets are usually dry mounted

Re: 140 Merc Water In Oil

Well, Thanks for the info.... I took the exhaust manifold off, and found two LARGE cracks, about 5 inches long each. In the process I took compression readings, from first cyl to fourth, I got 180, 120, 160, 240. This is a WIIIIIDE spread as far as I know, I'm thinkin they should be within 30 psi or so. Any comment on this? So anyway as of now, my plan is to get a new manifold, new gaskets and put it all back together.... Also, in the exhaust tube going to the outdrive there is a check valve, which looks to be normally open. When I pulled the tube off, as is water could flow backward in it. Is this supposed to be this way, or should this valve be normally closed. I'm thinking it should. Any reply would help!!!!
