Steering will not turn to right at WOT

I have a 1988 Crestliner with a I/O 165 HP Mercruiser. I just purchased the boat so I do not know a lot. It is a 4 cyc inline engine. The boat is a V hull skinging boat that is a 17ft boat. The problem I am having is at WOT the steering will not turn to the right. At 1/2 or 3/4 thorottle it turns to the left and right. At 3/4 it is getting a little harder to turn to right. If I let go of wheel it goes to right in circle. What is the problem does the trim tab need adj. or is it some thing else. Please help?

That would be my first guess...More than likely the trim tab/anode is corrded to the point that is doing absolutely nothing for you in either of its roles. There will be a plastic cap right above the trim tab that needs to be removed in order to access the 3/8 allen head to remove the trim tab. Easy job and the part is about $10.

Does the drive have a BIG aftermarket foil bolted on it ?<br /><br /><br />tommays

Replace the zinc like Retodd says...<br />Angle the rear of the zinc in the direction of the hard steer....JK

It did have a foil on it when I got it but it was broken in half. I don't like those things away so I took it off. There holes there from also. Part of lower unit is broke off there where the trim tabe is also. Maybee a cople inchesof the corner.

I will have to try this addjustment tonight and see if this works. Right now the trim tab is striaght.

You might also try a Different Prop,... If you've got a spare.....<br />Props can do Weird Things sometimes......<br /><br />You say this is a 165hp,....4, Four Cylinder,..??....

Yea Bondo, in 87 Merc put out what they called a 165 hp 4 cylinder. Nothing more than a 470 with a new name.<br /><br /><br />
