Not only that, your '82 25 is a through prop exhaust and your '72 25 isn't. Two totally different animals. The '72 design is derived from the '57 18hp, that has endured many changes through the years. Your '82 model is the later 31.8 cube design, which is basically a de-tuned 35 of the same time frame.

Ooooh you're right. I guess through prop exhaust didn't come till later.

Well, this is a trick I did several years ago in this same situation. I took the drive shafts from both lower units and cut exactly equal lengths from each then threaded the top piece that fits to the powerhead and the lower piece to the lower unit, you want to use. If both drive shafts are the same diameter, it will work. If their 1/2" diameter, for example, then thread them 1/2 - 13 thread and get a coupler that like 2" long. The threads have to be cut perfectly square and straight though, or your drive shaft won't spin smoothely.
Before you go through this procedure though, make sure that the lower unit will bolt up okay.

Yea the lower bolts fine and thank you for shedding that light i was thinkin about have a shop weld the spline on top but with the heat it probly would never come out straight

You need to check the length of the shift shafts beforehand as they should be alot diffrent also.
