It was sold to me as a 1997 Johnson 48 SPL. There is no tag on the bracket and the only number on the freeze plug is G4069575. Anywhere else I can look? Thanks.

Can you post some pics? Maybe someone can help narrow it down.

Re: help finding model number

The 48hp was made from 1987-96 so I can tell you that it is not a 97. Throw some pics up and we can tell you what year it is, because I do not think you can cross reference the number you have. We need the model number to know the year......like J48ESLCCC

Re: help finding model number

All the 48's had SPL on the model number or cover somewhere. It just stands for "Special". The 48 is a derated model of the 50hp is all. They were designed more for commercial type of work and most are bare bones type of motors.

Re: help finding model number

I've called BRP consumer line more than once with only a freeze plug number and they have told me exactly what details I needed to know about my motors. The recorded message when you call says they no longer do it but stay on the line and they will (my experience) bend over backwards to come up with the information. Best of luck. Rick.

I know it is 92 or later because of the black plastic flat top carburetor but I need some more time to pin it down.... got to get the kids off to school now though

Re: help finding model number

Ok it is a 1995 or 96 because it has the hour glass figure thermostat housing cover. That is as far as I have gotten, and like I said before it cannot be a 1997 because they did not make the 48SPL after 1996

Thanks, that is great, so it is a 48 SPL, 95 or 96. If you need any more pictures let me know. Thank you .

Re: help finding model number

Well now that you said that.... upon further review I am not sure it is an SPL model. I just assumed that because of the cover. But looking at the flywheel and coil assembly it would be indicative of a 40hp or 50hp model and not a 48SPL.

The reason you don't have a model number on the welch plug is because the block may be an aftermarket block. Someone may have seized the engine at one time and bought a replacement powerhead. I had this problem with an 85' 20hp I purchased once. The after market block only had a serial number with no model number.

Re: help finding model number

Here is what I mean.... look at the ignition diagram compared to your engine of the 1995 40 and 50hp TL models versus the 48SPL

(40 and 50hp)
http://www.marineengine.com/parts/j...ystem+-+40-50+Electric+Start+El+And+Tl+Models

(48SPL)
http://www.marineengine.com/parts/j...&manufacturer=Johnson&section=Ignition+System

Any 95' or 96' 40-48SPL-50hp shop manual should be almost if not exactly the same manual which will most likely cover all the different 40, 48, 50, and 55 models. DO NOT GET A CLYMER OR SELOC MANUAL. Get an OEM service manual.

Well I guess your getting closer to my engine by the sound of things. I have a 95 - 40 HP Johnson. It is charcoal colored not white but I have no idea if color was a choice. It is the first engine I called BRP about as all I had was the frost plug number which was G3844477. From that number they told me it was Model J40ELEO which is a 95 - 2 cylinder, 2 stroke 40 hp., 20 inch shaft. (their words, not mine) The number I called (over three years ago) was 847-689-7090. I hope something I gave you here helps. Rick.

Re: help finding model number

Sounds like it, my number is G4069575 . I had called a different number, 715-848-4957 and could never get through. I will try the other number when I have time. Thanks for the help :)
