omc 5.0 engine swap

im doing an engine swap on my 25ft ciera omc stringer drive. what i need to know is , i removed all the bellhousing bolt and supported the drive and intermideate housing removed the mouter mount bolts and all the wireing...................does the engine just slide forward and i would the be able to lift it out???????????? kinda like a car engine to trans setp???? please help me i need to get this done thank you in advance

The engine will just slide away from the intermediate housing if you undid the exhaust sleeves. The only remaining contact will be the drive shaft sliding out of the coupler bolted to the flywheel.<br /><br />I would definitely allow the bell housing to tip up a little so do not hold it rigid at the drive. The intermediate mounts and the boot should hold it sufficiently for removal of the motor. Only brace the outdrive if you are going to move the boat or to take the pressure off of everthing till you reinstall the motor.<br /><br />What year is it?

it is an 85 i thought it would slide out easy. another ?????????? im swaping the distributer over what is the correct spark timing degree??????.and does that intermediate hold oil for the graers?????how do i check that?????the drive i dont know the condition the ballgear seems alittle hard to turn.i still have it connected but it seems hard to rock it forward and reverse by hand is that normal>??????????

I assume you are retaining the marine centrifugal advance distributor. It runs at 10 deg BTDC. You need to pay attention to the type of distributor gear vs the new engine requirement. I hope you have taken into account the differences between marine engines and automotive engines. What are you swapping the original engine out with?<br /><br /><br />The intermediate housing has gear oil for the tapered drive shaft bearings. The plug is at the top of the housing where it sticks out of the boot. Some where below that is the drain. My early unit did not have a drain so without looking at a manual......?<br /><br />Your last question is unintelligible?

the engin is a 305 auto engine cam out of a heavy truck i was told the cam should be good for marine applications.i will check the gear though.i caned all frezze plugs to brass.and plan on using all marine accs.alt starter water pump etc.tell me if im wrong..................................the last question is the ball gears are worn about way. i plan on replacing them but im more consered about the engine right now. being that they are worn i have play to move the gear back and forth it seems a little stiff ???? is that normall or should it spin using my pinky finger lol????????

ball gears are worn half way.i bought this boat and it was not properly winterized so im going to repair it the drive is all the way up and have not done much to the boat yet i figured i do a swap on the engine.is there any other freeze damage i need to worry about in the drive end of thre deal i see no cracks any were but on the block and manifolds.

The engine should be suitable as long as you run all the marine periferals.<br /><br />The only other area of freeze concern is if the outdrive was up, allowing water to be trapped in the lower outdrive. <br /><br />It would be difficult to spin the ball gear on the outdrive side. Spin the prop and watch the ball gear turn. As to the wear, some bozo ran with the outdrive in some degree of up, for some period of time. They need to be replaced. Mine are 31 y/o and still original. The outdrive should never be run more than 10-15% up and that only to get you out of shallow water. Never to trim the boat.<br /><br />None of this is a guarantee that everything is ok with the outdrive. Without any history and considering it's age, you should have it looked at by a professional.
