1965 9.5 hp Sportwin hard to pull

Someone gave me one of these old butes. The motor was seized when he gave it to me. Not from over heating but from sitting for twenty years in a shed. Some rust, varnish, etc. All the usual. I managed to free up the motor. Both cylinders still have over 85 psi compression. I have had the head off and everything looks great. Better than expected. The problem I am having is that it is very hard to pull. Some times it gets stuck and I have to put a wrench on the fly wheel to get it freed up. Never does seem to get fully freed up though. Any Ideas what I should do next. Is it worth all the time and energy to tear the hole thing down. Parts aren't easy to come by, and never cheap. Let alone I don't have much experience with outboard motors. Thanks in advance for all your help. Its amazing the knowledge on this forum.

Drop the lower unit and see if it frees up any, maybe the problem is in the lower unit.

try mixing gear oil with viniger and letting sit 2 days in cyl should free rings up.......then try and start using wd40 i agree its always good to inspect lower unit also

How much vinegar to gear oil? Is it 50/50? I will pull lower unit tonight than let the motor sit for a few days with the vinegar mixture. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks again for the help!

Well after a lot of words that can't be mentioned on this forum, I finally got the lower unit to separate. Sure enough that freed up the power head. A little squirt of WD40 and two pulls she fired over. I will take apart the lower unit and figure out what the problem is. When I dropped the lower unit the water tube pulled out of the power head. Can this just be pushed back into the power head? I haven't looked at the part break down to see if there was any sort of retainer for it in the power head. It took quite a bit of heat and prying to separate the lower unit. When I say a lot, I mean an acetylene torch and a two foot flat bar. Thought I was going to burn through the aluminum. Hopefully the lower unit isn't trashed. I all ready have more time invested in this than I would care to admit. I am now determined to bring this motor back to life. Even if its not for this year. It's been a fun little project. Thanks again for the help guys.

Wow it must have been stuck bad. Did you undo the shift rod coupling? I just wanted to say I see lower units on ebay all the time for 9.5's if that's of any interest to you. Best of luck. Rick.

Yeah Rick as soon as I got the thing to drop that 1/2" I disconnected the shift linkage. Three of the bolts had broken off and had an extreme amount of corrosion. That and the water tube being fused to the water pump made it a real chore. I looked at the parts list. I see that the water tube has a washer of some sort at the top. Is there any way to change this without taking the entire power head apart. I see three screws on a plate in the area that the water tube used to go into. Is that as far up as it needs to go? How does this washer lock onto the water tube? I all ready think I have another lower unit from someone I know. Will see the shape its in when I get it.

On a second note the screws going through the water pump wont budge. I will grind off the heads and try to pry off the housing. My question is can these slotted bolts be changed to standard bolts that I can use a socket on. Stainless is just so soft. Bolts will always have some corrosion due to salt water up here.
