Finding a decent engine rebuilder?

My 98 4.3L Mercruiser needs to be repowered. There are obviously a lot of options out there and the price seems to average around $2,000. One place even claims to be able to give your engine 50 more horsepower (http://www.usengine.us/mercruiser.html) with 7 year warranty. There is also engine builders in my area with good reputations. Anyone have any suggestions?

Keep it local with a shop that has done and is familiar with marine engines.

Rebuilt marine engines from the national guys are a crap-shoot. You may be better off going with a local guy with a good reputation as you said.

The warranties are pretty much worthless as the cost of using the warranty is high, and companies will do what they can to avoid the warranty claim.

In that size of engine, you may want to consider a new (brand-spanking new) long block. It may not be too bad $$$$-wise.
