Just bought a used boat with 1986 Merc 115 two stroke. It seems to run fine but I want your opinion on the reliability and longevity of this motor. Is there anything I should watch out for and how about preventive maintenance?

That design was one of the most successful OBs ever made. It has an ign system that was used on the V6 Mercs, up untill the mid 90s or later.

The best way to treat that machine is to always use fresh 50::1 fuel mix, change the gear oil once a year, Replace the waterpump impeller every 3 years or so, prop it properly and keep the carbs clean. All pretty standard OB maintenance items.

+1 on what Chris stated. the motor will last until its neglected. keep up with the maintenance and it will last many thousands of hours.

Ditto! Towers of Powers Rock, and you've got one of the best ones ever built! Treated well, she should give you many good years of service.

+1 on all comments. I have one on my boat now and it is the best motor I have ever owned...and I had many different brands over the years. I've had it for 9 years now.....
