How do i test the tacho pulse wire ? evinrude 60hp 1995

I am trying to rig up my tacho on my evinrude 60hp 1995 triple.

I know the pulse is the grey wire the positive is purple and black is ground etc.

But how can i tell if the Grey pulse wire is working ?
i do have positive and negative at the wires but have no idea how to check the pulse wire.

The RPM tacho i have is the original omc one,but i have no idea if the guage is good or bad.

Dont realy want to buy another one if this is good and i have a problem with the engine wiring etc.

i have a multi meter (not exactly any good with it though ) so any help would be very good.

If your meter has a frequency counter (might say "Hz") you should be good to go. Assuming that's the case hook the meter negative to the ground, hook the meter positive to the tach wire, and measure the frequency. If you're getting a good tach signal the frequency should show (as I recall) 1/10 of the engine speed in rpm's.

With a multi-meter with a DVA adapter you should show 8 volts or higher on the gray lead running at 1000 rpm.

Thanks for replies guys, but Nothing like Hz on my meters, and i have no idea what a DVA adaptor is.

ive got 2 meters but they are just cheapo ones that i use mainly for testing battery voltage etc.
pic of them below.

maybe i need to find a better multi-meter to test the wiring etc.

like i say these are just very cheap run of the mill meters.
