1982 30 HP Mariner. Replaced the shift shaft boot. I didn't pay much attention to the operation of the shift shaft before doing the work, so I don't know if I screwed something up.
Here's what I now have. I can pull the shift shaft up (from neutral) and the gear case locks into forward. Push it down one notch and it locks into neutral. However, when I push it down one more notch, to put it into reverse, it shaft won't stay in the reverse position unless I rotate the drive shaft.
Is this normal, or did I screw something up?
