normal charging voltage 1986 70hp

i am not sure what is normal as far as voltage going to the battery while engine is running, it starts out at 13.8 and goes as high as 16 while running. any ideas???

I have the same engine. The charging system is unregulated, so the voltage will go hi when your battery is fully charged. The charging system is only 6 amps max though so there is little chance of boiling the battery. Probably a good idea to keep an eye on water levels in it anyway. I check once a month or so just to be safe. Most modern electronics can handle the hi voltage, but it would be a good idea to be sure of that when you buy new stuff.

For a unregulated charging system that is normal.
