Re: New Bowriders???

I would go SeaRay with a Mercruiser 5.7 liter. we loved the SeaRay with the 5.0, however I always wanted just a tad bit more power. For what we used it for it was almost perfect except that I wanted a tad bit more speed.

When I bought the SeaRay, it was a toss-up between the SeaRay and a Crownline.

Re: New Bowriders???

I prefer my boats on the upscale side even though I also own a Bayliner. So then with that list which would only apply to the 21 foot and over class, I would like any of them but the BL. I'm not a fan of Sea Ray and think their under 20 foot models are overpriced but their Select models are just fine. As for the engine, I'd get the largest V8 that was available on the option list and dual props. With that list then, they are all nice and I think compete around the margins and so really to me the only way to narrow down is to go check each out which is a nice problem to have. Forgot about the Glastron but those to me are budget with a blingy coverstory.

Re: New Bowriders???

If price is no option, I'd go with a Cobalt 210, powered by a Volvo V8 and a Duoprop drive. IMO, no one trims out a boat as nice as Cobalt.

Then again, I would never be paying ~$55k for a 21 foot bowrider, because that's insanity, so I suppose it doesn't really matter. If limited to the brands you listed, I would probably go with the Four Winns or the Chapparral.

You need to be asking your self what is important to you.
They will all take a family of four swimming, skiing, and Wakeboarding.

Are you will to pay an extra thousand dollars for polished stainless cup holders and such, Or will nice plastic ones be just fine.
How much is four shades of color in the vinyl seat covers worth? Another thousand? Would two tone vinyl make you just as happy?
Does it matter to you if the boat burns 5 gallons an hour or 15?
Many a boater has purchased a boat they could afford to buy but not afford to operate.

Perhaps your choice of cars will indicates your choice of appointment level for the boat. Kia? Chevy? Lexus? Rolls Royce?

They will all do the job. And get you back safely. The difference is in the frills.
So what is the budget, Boat? Operation? Maintenance?

Agreed, Cobalt is about as nice of a runabout as you can buy if money is no option, Chris Craft as well. Chapparal would be my choice if money we more of an option. No preference over the drive type between merc or Volvo as they will both offer the same performance and identical powerplants. It'd be the biggest V8 available strapped to a B3 or duoprop.

Re: New Bowriders???

Just to throw something different in there that wasn't on your list, you might want to take a look at Yamaha's 21 footers. They're jet driven, which is "different" so some of their operating characteristics will be different than a stern drive. They are very spacious for their size, have a fantastic swim deck, very reliable engines (twins) and are easy to maintain. Not as fancy as some of the brands initially mentioned, but not spartan either. We were shopping with the same basic requirements (family of 5, tubing, recreational wakeboarding and tubing and possible future wake surfing...again recrational, not serious) and looked at boats from Monterey, Four Winns, Cobalt, Chap, Bayliner, Sea Ray and ultimately ended up buying a 2011 Yamaha SX210, which we are loving. A big differentiator for us was seating space and layout. We really like the wraparound layout of v-drive wakeboarding boats but didn't want to spend that kind of money and found that the Yamaha was the only boat we came across with that type of layout. Like I said, just something to throw into the mix. There is a Yamaha Jet Boat specific forum where you can get a TON of information, but I'm not sure whether it's kosher to link to the address from here.

I wouldn't rule out a V-drive (Mastercraft, Nautique, Centurion, Malibu, Tige, etc). You list skiing and wakeboarding as two of your main activities, and these are made for that. They are bow riders with lots of room with a nice layout, and most have a great water level swim platform for swimming. Your kids will thank you if they really get into boarding.

Very pricey, however, if your looking new.

Re: New Bowriders???

Four Winns Horizon 210 - we even have the color picked out for when we can afford it :D Would be with Volvo power as I despise Merc.

Why? The U shaped seating in the back allows for storage of all my fishing gear. The step through transom is a big plus since my parents are getting up there in age so getting in/out of my current boat is becoming an issue for them. The sunpad converting into lounge seats is a BIG plus for my wife. The front storage compartments are generous as well. Doesn't hurt that my current boat is a Four Winns either.

Jets are out due to the areas I boat in. So are true inboards as I don't like the idea of a bent prop shaft or getting the drive wedged in a rockpile. I'd love an outboard with the features of the boat we're looking at but there's nothing available in a DC configuration that we like styling wise.

I looked at Chaparral, Monterey, Glastron (VEC is a selling point for me), Larson, etc. Anything that's Merc is tossed out immediately. Did I mention I don't like Merc??

Yes you did. It must be for some other reason than the power plants? Since ALL use GM products.

Stingray offers several of it's bowrider models with an outboard power option, including some with self-bailing decks in true DC fashion.

True, Stingray boats aren't trimmed as nice as FW boats, but they are still very nice boats for a lot less money, IMO :)

Re: New Bowriders???

Yep. Back in the late 90's early 00's Merc had an issue with their outdrives. I forget off hand if it was the Alpha or Bravo line but in any event, due to poor design work they were having galvanic corrosion issues. To the point where every boating magazine I subscribed to were running monthly stories on brand new boats having the outdrives replaced at the owner's expense since Merc refused to admit there was a design flaw. Only after months of pressure from the industry did they finally own up to having an issue and correcting it. This alone turned me off to Merc and all their products.

Then add in I had a '99 Bayliner with a 120HP Force outboard that was a low end Merc. That product was worse than the '56 Evinrude Big Twin and the Big Twin had a scorched cylinder. What a POS that Force was.

Both my Uncles also had similar experiences with Merc outboards and they were also replaced/boats sold outright to get rid of the problem.

So yeah, I don't like Merc and will not own one. Any boat manufacturer that wants my $$ will have to offer Volvo as an alternative. Or finally produce a decent looking 21' DC with outboard power that I can toss a Honda onto.

Just looked and all my local marinas list it with a 150HP Yamaha. Max HP is 200. IF I were going that route, it'd be with a 200HP outboard as a 21' fiberglass boat pushed with less HP than I currently have won't sit well with SWMBO. That and its definitely lacking some of the options that sold us on the Horizon 210 model.

I know what your saying. I just had my boat out today. It has a 93 force 120 hung on it and it didn't give me any problems. Never has. It just pisses me off when you buy something, expecting it to perform to a standard and it doesn't

In all seriousness I know the force motors got a bad rap but there are some pretty strong force motors out there. It is all how you take care of the motor and boat.

Let me get a hold of a Volvo powered boat and neglect it and I am sure I can have that motor running like crap or not at all in no time.

Re: New Bowriders???

Uhh Flightdoc - that was on the '99 Bayliner I ordered NEW. It had less than 1 year of service on the boat before I said enough was enough. And that was with Factory performed maintenance at the appropriate intervals. Again, that Force motor absolutely sucked much worse than the Envirude I mentioned.

FTR: The Envirude was scorched before we bought the boat. Found that out after taking it to a skilled mechanic that knew about these antiques. Was still running when we parked the boat.

IF I were buying an outboard again, here's the engine manufacturers I'd go with in order:

Honda - can't say enough about how smooth they are
Evinrude - been on the newer Bombardier built ones and they perform just a notch under Honda in my opinion
Yamaha - haven't been on a 4 stroke boat but have been on the Oil Injected 2 strokes and they seem nice other than the cloud of smoke they emit.

I/O:

Without exceptions - Volvo Penta.

Brian you know that Volvo Penta has trouble with corrosion on their drives now too, right?

(Mercruiser's trouble were specifically on their Bravo 3s.)

Find the nicest and fairest service guy in your area and ask him what boat he would repair at a fair price.
