Hi I have just bought a boat with a 1973 Merc.500, 50hp motor which hadn't been run for a couple of years, after replacing the starter and plugs and checking wiring it started an ran very smoothly, however I can't get water to come out the pee hole so I have only run it for very short periods. I have had the ear muffs on and tried back flushing through the pee hole with a water blaster. The previous owner told me he had replaced the empeller but I suspect it was before he stopped using it. what are my options? I don't have a manual yet. So any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks it advance
Derek :)

With the cowl removed and the engine in a tank of water start it and make sure the exhaust plate port side is not hot to the touch, if it is the water pump is not working and the impeller will need replacing if it remains cool the telltale is plugged. You cannot use muffs as the will force water past a bad impeller
