Gimbal bearing grease fitting question

I recently had my outdrive off and inspected the gimbal bearing while I was at it. While it was off, I went ahead and pumped some grease through the fitting on the bell housing and observed it seeping out between the races so I felt good that everything was in working order. After putting the outdrive back on, I wanted to give it a few extra shots of grease just to make me feel better about it being well greased. The grease is now coming out between the zerk fitting and the tube that carries the grease to the gimbal. Thinking that there may be an obstruction in the tube, I removed the zerk fitting and checked for any foreign objects with a finish nail, but did not feel or see anything. Reinstalled the fitting and same thing, grease is squirting out after the zerk. What gives? I figured any excess would exit the gimbal bearing and just end up in the bellows.
