Newbie here. Just wanted to see if anyone knows the torque spec for a 1995 force 2 cyl 40hp pinion nut torque spec.. Im currently having to replace my drive shaft due to the pinion nut breaking off. Im not sure how this happened, all three gears look good. Some how the nut broke off and the gears chewed it into small pieces but no damage. Thanks for your help.

I know Mercury is good but I have trouble believing that gears remained in good condition after digesting a pinion nut---unless the nut was bronze or brass. A couple of photos would really satisfy my curiosity.

Re: 1995 40hp pinion nut torque spec

Really surprising, but hey, I'll take luck over skill any day. If the nut is about 3/4 inch or 19 MM, the torque would be up around 90 foot pounds--but don't quote me on that. I am thinking that the pinion nut on the larger, earlier Force engines was 3/4 inch and torqued to 90.
Maybe someone else will jump in with the correct value.

The really surprising thing is that the nut broke off at all. Basically, once it snugs the pinion to the splines there is no other load than the torque on it. Unless it was overtightened by a previous owner and the shaft threads were ready to twist off, it should not have happened.
