Reassembling the recoil starter on a 1980 9.8 Mercury ?

I took the recoil assembly out to replace the rope and i need to know the procedure to re assemble the parts and to also pre load the recoil ~ spring ~ Any help/advice is greatly appreciated Thanks

Thanks for the great information and in the parts diagram....."number 23 is a return spring".....i don't think that i had one?
I got it all back together and on the engine....and the recoil works great......is that return spring needed? and IF it's needed then i am not sure where it went on the plate assembly with the pawls?..... although it might have fell off during the removal of the parts and rolled away........Big SIGH !

Early starters did not have a return spring
