I was going to say cut it half and count the rings. After 2005, Yamaha quit putting date codes on their engines. But if you look on the starboard side of the transom bracket, there is a build date sticker. When looking up parts data on engines after 2005, sometimes the information will refer to a serial number range.

Watch out for that build date. Outboards are often built in the year before the model year. For example almost half of the 2006 models were built in 2005.

But there is no 2006 models. Everything is going by date sold now. So a 2005 that was sold in 2009, is a 2009 model.

Well, that solves that problem :)

Thanks for the replies. I especially liked the one that said cut it in half and count the rings. I suppose the number of rings would depend on the number of pistons wouldn't it. Seems to me that Yamaha really doesn't care much after they have pushed it out the door.
