Noob needs help ID'ing leg unit of 1979 MOC 200

Greetings all:

I blew up the leg unit of my 1979 OMC this summer. I've searched the net and it seems every model number starts with 99 but my OMC leg model is 982413......does anyone have some insight as to where I may find what parts I may be looking for? The boat mechanic I brought it too called it a stringer 800 and wanted a minimum of 6 grand to fix it. I really like my boat and would like to fix it but I paid 6 grand for it and to put another 6 grand (minimum) into it does not make it a 12,000 dollar boat.....this seems like it may be my winter project..........Thanks in advance if anyone has some insight or a direction I should head towards.

those six digit model numbers were never really referenced outside the factory.

If you have a V8 engine, your boat originally was equipped with an 800 series OMC Sterndrive.
1979 drives were hydromechanical which were used from 1978 to 1981.

Your 800 series drive consists of an upper gearcase and a lower gearcase. The odds of both halves simultaneously "blowing up" are nil.

You need to diagnose the failure (upper or lower and what broke) to figure out which you need. Heck, maybe you just need the driveshaft that connects the two - it fails often and is $129

no diagnosis, no good advice on how to proceed or what to buy

$6K is a "blanket quote". It's enough coin to cover any and all issues a shop may encounter - basically, that's the price of a brand new aftermarket sterndrive and a new OEM shift cable.

OMG!!! thank you so much. that is exactly what he quoted, a brand new aftermarket sterndrive!!!1 300 dollars more than a rebuild. He said the lower was full of water (bad maintenance on my part..........oops) and all rusted but functional. I was taking the kids out for a tube ride, idling into the deeper part of the lake, gave it throttle, picked up and started planing then boom nothing! I thought I hit a sandbar and sheared the blades off the prop. Goes into gear fwd and rev but nothing. I thought maybe the same thing, a driveshaft, but I don't know where to start looking for schematic drawings........

Head on over to shop.evinrude.com. Click on parts at the top left. Then from the drop down menu, select stern drive. Then select your year, engine size and specific model. Once there you can select on any part of your engine/drive and see exploded parts diagrams. You will definitely need to remove the drive from the boat to do any real troubleshooting. ... and, don't underestimate looking for a used drive or donor boat. You'll need to be careful about it, but you can sometimes find something that works for a reasonable price. I've done that once already with my electric shift.

Sounds quite likely you stripped the water pump shaft. Go to my thread here: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=501126 and look at the 1st pic in my second post. The shaft in question is part #35. It's not hard to get at. Good luck and welcome to iboats!
