No spark. Then spark. Then none. Black sticky substance comming from under flywheel?

I just got a 71 Johnson Evinrude 50hp. model 50273C. that ran fine. Then suddenly no spark. Couple min. later It has spark. Runs fine....Then quits. I recheck for spark.... none. Both cylinders are effected. Ok, next day I look for any loose wires and everything seems to be in order except I noticed some black sticky substance on the top of the motor comming from underneath the flywheel. It seems to be leaking from two different spots. Maybe from the stator? But here's the thing, it fired right up and ran all afternoon on the lake. But now, It has no spark again. I can't figure this out. Anybody experence this before? :confused:

replace the stator
