I am trying to help my son repair his 72 7.5 Mercury and it has the Phase Maker ignition. He is in the process of replacing the wiring to the points and is stumped on the easiest and or best way to replace the wiring from the points. Is this wiring soldered to the bolt and is that how you replace it? Or is there another way? ie wire terminal mounted under head a new screw?? He did have cracked insulator blocks and has replacement parts for that.

My handicap is that he is 300 miles away and I'm talking him through this via cell phone and pictures. Oh and he is mechanically challenged....

Additionally this is my first post and thank you for everyones valuable sharing of their knowledge....I've been lurking for several weeks and found immense information and help...

The wire is silver soldered to the bolts and will need to be replaced. Old Mers .com is where I bought mine from and everything works great. Do not touch the point settings on the motor as they are very diffacult to get set correctly, and do not burn as regular points do. As for the points matching the cyclender, the best way to tell which one is for #1 cyclender is to use a ohm meter from the wire going to #1 coil, to the block, with the flywheel removed and turn the motor over with a wrench, and see which set of points is making when the meter pegs out. that set of points will be for that cyclender. Besat to get a manual for the motor for setting the points and timming of the motor as both will have to be done along with setting the sync of the carb to match up. Even then you will have trouble unless one totaly understands the electrical system of those motors. Might want to consider haveing it done by one that has worked on them and has done them before.
