No real negatives to installing one.I guess you could say price and opening the system up to potential air leak,fuel leak but thats a real stretch.Lots of ways for water/condensation to find there way into your tank.I installed a fuel filter years ago after finding water was entering the fuel tank through the vent.I readjusted the vent but installed the water separator/filter for piece of mind.Just recently upgraded the fuel filter/canister head to stainless due to the old one pitting.If I had it to do over definetly would spend the extra $$ for a stainless steel canister head.
