I am looking at purchasing a 97' Four Winns 170 w/ 3.0 Volvo. When the seller ran it this spring he found water in the oil. The shop thinks it is a cracked head. The seller is having the repair done. Question.. is the boat even worth considering after the repair or should I just walk away? What are the chances there will be more problems from the water in the oil.

Chances are high that there is more to the story than just some water in the oil from a cracked head.I would steer clear or pay a tech to check the motor out while it is apart.Charlie

The boat overheated last fall due to a impeller problem. This is what cracked the head and cooked the gasket. Tech has tore the motor apart and doesn't see any other damage.

I would find it hard to believe that it went through the winter with water in the oil and there is no other damage. You can rest assure that he did not maintain the boat well if he didnt bother to change the oil in the fall which is when it is supposed to be changed.

Long term effects: lots of rust- probably etching the crank journals. Junk. <br />I used the heads off the old frozen/cracked motor when i swapped the block into mine- not sure how long it had sat with water in it, but it made a mess of the heads even just from the humidity and moisture... looked like barnacles ... hardened water/oil droplets....
