sounds like its time to have a close look at things. are the points super clean and gapped to 020? are the coils modern or original? have you had a look at the plugs? are they champion j4j or champion j6c's.....or some other brand?

need a third yes! lol. but the odds are long for both units to do the same thing, but obviously its happening. try cleaning the points through the inspection hole, and see if you get any fire ?

Well lets take a look here the things that make spark are flywheel coil condseror points plug wire and plug

never had spark on the rear had it on the front then all went away

Re: johnson 1956 no spark need help

jmo, but as mentioned, id try the easy stuff first. dirty points are the most usual cause of weak/no spark and they can be somewhat cleaned without pulling the flywheel. other than that, pull the flywheel, and break out the multi-meter. ( if both motors sat around awhile there are many spots for corrosion to cause issues)

Re: johnson 1956 no spark need help

i use a a strip of emery cloth, followed by a a stip of plastic dipped in acetone or brake cleaner. some will say not to use emery cloth or paper as it may leave deposits on the contacts, but ive had no problems so far. ( just opening the points and inserting a strip of white paper, then closing them, can tell a alot. if you see a black circle on each side of the paper....points are dirty, real dirty. lol)

Re: johnson 1956 no spark need help

jmo, but i prefer the conversion over the pressure tank set up, and it has nothing to do with the "so called dangers" of pressure tanks. its all to do with how quick i can get a replacement part if needed. i can get a b&s fuel pump same day, but a rebuild kit for a pressure tank could be days or weeks coming. and i really dont want to spend $$ on parts to have on hand that i may never need.

Re: johnson 1956 no spark need help

By the way I do know the difference between Johnson and Evinrude ,the 56 Johnson is the one I was taking parts off,I think this one is a 57 without looking it up
