I have a '73 Fiberform 19ft runabout. The engine is a Ford 302. I can jump start the engine from the solenoid, but I can't start it from the ignition switch. When I turn the key, the guages work, the trim works, but I don't even get a click from solenoid. I've cleaned the battery terminals and made sure they are secure. What can I do to solve the problem?

One of these:

1) Ignition switch is faulty
2) Neutral interlock in your throttle/shift control is faulty(you sure you have it in neutral?)
3) Wires between ignition switch and neutral interlock or between neutral interlock and starter solenoid are open.

Yup, its a Ford. (I'm a big Ford fan and have an 888). I suspect you need to replace the solenoid. I have yet to own an older Ford that didn't eat at least one of those, except my 888, but I expect it at any time. I dread it to since the solenoid on mine requires a contortionist to change out. It's an inexpensive part though.

Thanks for the input. In reference to the questions: It is a stern drive, there is no dead man switch, I checked the ignition switch (OK), it's definately in neutral, I'll check the wires between the ignition and solenoid. Is there a quick test to check the solenoid?

Just because it's in neutral dooesn't mean the neutral interlock switch is working correctly. You need to get your meter out and start checking things.

Re: Mercruiser 888 starting problem

My solenoid test has always been if I can short the posts and get it to turn over, or on must Ford solenoides I've had die, I could tap them a few times with the end of a screwdriver and get it to work one/two more times. If it were automotive, its $7 bucks at autozone, the marine version is probably no more than $25.

I guess you could always use a meter on the starter post to see if current flows when you turn the switch or to see if the field wire has power.

I usually don't spend much time testing them. If they are suspect and I can bypass them and get action, I replace. Used to have a car that went through one/yr like clockwork. It has to be a Ford thing. Last time I sat one on the counter at the parts store, the guy looked at it..."Ford, huh?". "Yup".

Check the motor kill switch. 888s have a switch to kill engine while shifting (takes engine pressure off gears). Wires to mine touched and melted on exhausst manifold. Engine was dead as a doornail.
