Let me start out by saying i am a complete novice with any engine work. I have an 1988 Bayliner that has an omc 5.0liter. I was having some trouble with stalling after running the boat for a couple of hours. I would come into dock and would stall out whenever i went from forward to reverse. The boat would always start right back up but as soon as i would engage either forward or reverse it would stall, unless i gave it almost full throttle.
I did some reading and figured a good place to start was with the carb. I have a rochester quadrajet that has never been rebuilt so i decided to give it a try. First problem i had was the nut coming from the carb going to the fuel pump was completely stripped so i had to cut the fuel line and bring it to my bench to get it off. I got the proper rebuild kit, followed both walk-thrus. the only thing i was unable to do was blow it all out with an air compresseor as i dont have access to one. in order to replace the fuel line that i cut i needed to remove the fuel pump as that end was stripped as well. I replaced both fittings the new nipples and replaced metal fuel line with rubber hose, i was advised this was okay since no fuel injection.
I was then at the stage of putting everything back on the boat. First problem i had was in order to put the fuel pump back on i needed to lift a piston type thing in the engine to get it to seat properly. after what seemed like an eternity contorted in my engine compartment on a 90 degree day i finally got it to lift and set on top of the protrusion coming from the fuel pump. fuel line went on with no problem. So did the carburetor. Reconnected my linkages and hoses. While getting ready to start the boat i went through the same sequence i have always used, pull out shifter putting boat in neutral pumped gas a few times and left it slightly revved. engine wouldnt start. tried again and no luck. Went back to engine compartment and fuel was leaking out of both sides of the carburetor puddling and making me very nervouse. So i left it like that. I am in need of some advice. Thinking at this point i am going to pull the carb back off and reopen it and see if there is anything off. Maybe wrong on the float? when putting the float assembly back in i didnt like the way the needle was setting seemed wierd. about ready to give up. thanks in advance.
